If you have lived through a Cache Valley winter, you already know what happens to the air. The furnace kicks on in October and does not really stop until April, and by January the indoor humidity in a lot of Logan and Hyde Park homes has dropped into the teens. That is hard on your skin, hard on your houseplants, and—whether homeowners realize it or not—hard on wood cabinets. One of the most common questions we hear at our Hyde Park shop is some version of: “Why did my old cabinets crack, and how do I keep it from happening again?” After more than 20 years building cabinetry for families across the valley, we have a clear answer.
Why wood cabinets crack in Cache Valley winters
Wood is hygroscopic, which is a technical way of saying it constantly trades moisture with the air around it. When the air is humid, wood absorbs moisture and swells slightly. When the air is bone dry, wood releases moisture and shrinks. This movement never fully stops for the life of the cabinet, and it is the single biggest reason cabinet doors and panels crack.
Cache Valley is a near-perfect storm for this problem. We sit at roughly 4,500 feet of elevation, our winters are long and cold, and almost every home runs forced-air heat that strips moisture out of the air. Interior designers and cabinet manufacturers agree that wood is happiest between 35% and 50% relative humidity. Drop below 20%—which happens routinely in a heated Smithfield or Providence home in January—and solid wood components start to shrink enough to open visible gaps.
The damage usually shows up in a few predictable places:
- Panel gaps. A five-piece door has a center panel that sits inside a frame. As the panel shrinks in winter, an unfinished line of raw wood can appear at its edges.
- Joint separation. Where the stiles and rails of a door meet, shrinkage can pull the miter or mortise slightly apart.
- Face-frame cracks. On cabinets built without room for movement, you may see hairline splits near screws or glue joints.
- Finish lines. Painted cabinets show this most, because the crisp white finish makes any seam or gap obvious.
Here is the important part: a well-built cabinet is designed to move without cracking. A poorly built one is not. The difference is not luck—it is wood species, construction, and how the cabinet was acclimated before it was installed.
Which wood species hold up best in a dry climate
Every wood moves, but they do not all move the same amount, and some tolerate dry Cache Valley air far better than others. When we sit down with a homeowner from Nibley or North Logan, wood selection is one of the first conversations we have.
- Maple. Dense, fine-grained, and dimensionally stable, maple resists cracking and holds its shape when humidity drops. Its smooth surface also makes it the best choice for painted cabinets, which is why we build so many painted maple kitchens for valley homes.
- Hickory. One of the hardest domestic hardwoods, hickory is impact-resistant and more forgiving of moisture swings. Its dramatic grain variation is perfect for the rustic and farmhouse kitchens we see in Richmond, Mendon, and the farming communities south of Logan.
- Cherry. Cherry actually does well in drier conditions and develops a deeper, richer patina over time with relatively little movement—a great pick for a warm, traditional look.
- Alder and knotty alder. Warm, honey-toned, and full of character, alder is softer, so it dents more easily and needs thoughtful construction to stay stable. We use it often, but we build it to account for its nature.
There is no single “best” wood—there is the right wood for your style, your household, and our climate. A busy family in Hyrum with three kids and a mudroom full of soccer cleats has different needs than a couple building a quiet retirement home in Wellsville.
Construction details that prevent cracking
Wood species matters, but construction is where cabinets are truly won or lost in a dry climate. These are the details we build into every Rivermill project, and the details a lot of mass-produced cabinets skip:
- Floating panels. On a five-piece door, the center panel should never be glued into the frame. It needs to float—free to shrink and expand with the seasons—so it can move without splitting. We also finish panels before assembly so no raw wood shows when they shrink in winter.
- Proper acclimation. Wood should reach the moisture content of its future home before it is milled and assembled. Because our shop and our customers share the same Cache Valley climate, our material is already acclimated to the conditions it will live in.
- Plywood boxes. We build cabinet boxes from plywood rather than particleboard. Plywood is dimensionally stable, holds screws better, and shrugs off the occasional moisture event near a sink or dishwasher.
- Sealed on all sides. A quality finish applied to every surface—including the backs and insides of doors—slows the rate at which wood gives up moisture, which reduces stress and cracking.
- Solid joinery. Dovetailed drawer boxes and well-engineered door joints give wood somewhere to go when it moves, instead of forcing it to crack.
What Cache Valley homeowners can do to protect their cabinets
Even the best cabinets live longer in a stable environment. A few habits go a long way through a northern Utah winter:
- Add humidity in winter. A whole-home humidifier on your furnace, or even a couple of portable units, can hold your home in that 35–50% range and dramatically reduce wood movement.
- Wipe up water quickly. Cache Valley’s hard water leaves mineral spots, and standing water near sinks is tough on any finish. A quick wipe protects the wood and the sheen.
- Avoid extreme swings. Try not to let the house drop to 55 degrees while you are away and then blast it back to 72. Slow, steady conditions are easier on wood than dramatic swings.
Questions to ask any cabinet maker before you buy
Whether you are remodeling a 1970s home in Smithfield or building new construction in Providence, ask these questions before you sign with anyone:
- Are your door panels glued or floating? The answer should be floating.
- Are boxes built from plywood or particleboard? Plywood is the stronger, more stable choice.
- Do you finish all six sides of every part? Fully sealed wood moves less.
- Is your wood acclimated to our climate before you build? Local shops have a real advantage here.
- What happens if a panel shifts in the first winter? A confident local builder stands behind the work.
Ask those five questions and you will quickly separate builders who understand wood movement from those who simply assemble boxes.
